The capacity for transistors on integrated circuits will double every 18 months and become less expensive to produce. – Moore’s Law

Up until four years ago the above law was steadfast, and it had been ever since Gordon E. Moore† scribbled it down on a napkin in 1965. But, things have topped out.  We are now at the pinnacle of technological progress when it comes to the correlation between computing power and size – at least for now.‡

Regardless of the axiom’s current application, the spirit of Moore’s Law is progress through innovation.  It was a topic discussed at our Enterprise Network Conference this year in Ori Staub’s two-part presentation on tech trends.  He discussed the importance of mobile devices, their capabilities, and their application to the independent real estate industry.  A lot of questions were presented, and a lot of possibilities were left to be pondered – because so much of it is brand new.  These questions concerning new technologies are what spark innovation, because our imaginations muse, “What else can we do with this?”

Things like Twitter and Facebook are such a commonplace in today’s world that the need to integrate them into our businesses goes without saying.  Smart phones are heavily integrated and optimized for our websites, providing ultimate convenience, and putting us in constant contact with our clients.  New devices like the iPad are changing the way we look not only at mobile use, but how we see basic daily computing.  Add to these devices the emerging technology of virtual environments – where by simply holding up our mobile device’s camera to the world around us we are presented with information about what we’re seeing – and we find ourselves with yet another layer of possibility.

Arthur C. Clarke once said, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic,” and at first it is.  When television was first invented people marveled at how moving pictures were able to get into their living rooms.  Today we have the luxury of taking it for granted.  The next generation will be born into a world where virtual environments are commonplace, and the envelope will be pushed once again.  Then, just like those families in the 1950s watching television for the first time, we will look at whatever technological sorcery is conjured next and wonder, “How the hell did they do that?” The beauty of innovation is that is has the power to both challenge and delight.

Active Website has plans to implement all the aforementioned technologies on both a network and client level.  More information will be presented as it comes.  For a recap of these technologies, please watch the video below.

Gordon Moore is the co-founder and Chairman Emeritus of the Intel Corporation.

Currently a single silicone chip can’t handle the heat generated above 3gHz or so, which is why computing speed is now spread across several “cores” of slower processing.
