Recently I helped a couple of Enterprise Network Members get their Fan Pages on Facebook going, then John Sable sent me a link to this great blog about the advice that Facebook gave him to build a successful fan page.
Now the extent of my expertise pretty much stops at how to rss feed your blog to your Fan Page, which is why this article is a great learning tool. Facebook directed Keith Ferrazzi to Michael Phelps’ page as a great example of a strong Fan Page- some of his posts have 4,000+ people who “Like This” and 750+ Comments for each post- yeah, I wish! But besides the fact that Michael Phelps is likely to crush us all, there is some great advice for businesses using Facebook Fan Pages.
- Build the conversation first; sell second or third. In other words, be yourself and build your personal brand and collateral by being generous with content and openness before asking for anything. “Be yourself” and interact with you audience for a good while to build your rep before asking for or advertising anything.
- Make sure the page strongly conveys your individual voice. This can be somewhat challenging, as it’s not a page about you, but rather about your brokerage. So try to image what kind of voice your brokerage has if it were talking- would it be informational, friendly, engaging, fact based?
- Post compelling content. Metrics show that fans like photo and video best. (And btw, the best and easier metric for how you’re doing with content is in the number of comments you get.) The images should be complimented by interesting, uniquely-you status updates.
