Up Markets Remind Us: 2009 is Not a Year to Slow Down

December 29, 2008

There is no better way to get into the holiday spirit than to cuddle up in the warm house with some hot chocolate while it is snowing outside. This is exactly what I did last Sunday as I watched HGTV’s “Top 10 Christmas Towns.”

There were a couple of obvious choices like the North Pole and many other cities that generally enjoy snow during the holidays. Even Colorado made the list with Durango, ranking for its holiday activities and authentic Main Street. What surprised me was that several non-snowbound cities made the cut too; places like Kennebunkport, ME and New Orleans, LA. As I watched this special I began wondering how these cities are fairing during this tough economic downturn.

Surprisingly, about a third of the towns featured on the special have markets who are still experiencing positive numbers. A quick check for each town’s median home price on Trulia gave me the information I wanted.

On behalf of the Enterprise Network, Active Website made a generous contribution to Caruso Family Charities this holiday season. Rather than giving gifts, we took the opportunity to give to a well deserving organization that needs help now more than ever.

Caruso Family Charities mission is to help families that have children living with cancer. These families are in need of financial assistance due to the significant cost of medical treatment. Caruso Family Charities works with several local organizations in Colorado to help these families overcome the road blocks they face as they try to maintain their daily life. The proceeds provide these organizations the ability to help families with things like medical bills, transportation, housing and many other obstacles that these families face day to day.

Three Ways to Increase Your Website’s SEO

December 18, 2008

Do you know how many people are visiting your website vs. your competitor’s website?

Your website’s search engine rankings are greatly affecting your number of visitors. In a report by Jupiter Research earlier this year, researchers found that “65% less people view second, third and fourth page results than view and use first page results.” That’s probably not surprising to most of us. How often do you click through to even page two when searching? Most likely, not often which means all those people out there searching for real estate in your area probably aren’t either. Being on the first page of results for any search engine should be the ultimate goal for your brokerage website.

Here are three easy solutions Active Website offers to increase your SEO standings:

Enhance Your Website with Video

December 15, 2008

A couple of weeks ago we talked about using video to “Tackle Tough Real Estate Questions.” While video is a great tool, it is something that needs to be done right in order to be perceived well. A well thought out, well produced video can go a long way. Your video may be simple but it needs to look professional. As a result, I thought it would be great to give some hints and tips to making a great video. Business Week recently posted an article about “Making YouTube Work for Your Business.” This article gave a few suggestions that I thought were practical and easy enough to implement.

Here are Carmine Gallo’s suggestions for effective videos:

  1. Keep it short…Keep your YouTube clips under three minutes.
  2. Make it loud and clear…Use a microphone other than the one built in on the camera you use.
  3. Avoid bulleted PowerPoints…Presentations don’t transfer well on tape, if you have a presentation be sure to edit the video with full shots of the slide.
  4. Use good lighting…You don’t need flood lighting, but be conscious not to deliver your message in a dimly lit room.

Real Estate 2.0: Social Media is Transforming Real Estate

December 12, 2008

Business Week recently posted an article and slide show “Health 2.0: Patients on Social Networks” concerning the topic: Will Social Media Transform Medicine? I think it is appropriate to ask the same question of Real Estate Brokerages/Agents and their online presence:

Will Social Media Transform Real Estate?

Business Week claims that today “the web is becoming one giant consulting room.” I certainly agree. For any given topic or industry there are countless web forums, blogs and discussions of individual opinions for every product or service available. Similar to medicine, Real Estate Brokerages and their Agents previously held onto all the information and gave it out at their discretion. With the growth of the web, this system is transforming into a more transparent relationship between buyers/sellers and their agents.
